Lionel Tran
Born in 1970, Lionel Tran is a graphic designer by training. Going beyond creative computer-assisted designing, he oriented his research in visual art through sculpture and the shaping of steel sheets in a formal process within everyone’s reach. His ships, rooted in his childhood visions of port, are being reincarnated today under the powerful fire of the electric arc and the plasma torch. Lionel Tran is living and working in Veules-les-Roses, on the seacoast of Normandy.
The technique: The shaping of steel sheets is accomplished through vaporization of metal with a plasma cutter The assemblies are made by welding. The patinas are obtained by chemical and organic oxidation, paint and mixed media. — Broken ships, torn and oxidized. Distorted architectures. The remains of the Captain’s memories, of the end of the journey where all is in ruin when the extremities of our geographic worlds are reached. Lionel Tran’s references are deeply invested in the tragedy of human nature, the somber silence of the deep sea, of the liquid mystery of the beginnings. His world is one of deletion, disappearance and tipping over. His ship wreaks belong to the Vanitas genre. They conjure up the transient quality of life, fight against the natural elements only to resurface as a purity of form.
